Arthro-Pilates and Lupus

Spring Is In The Air

Can you smell it? Spring is in the air, and after a tedious and grueling winter it is a much welcomed reprieve from the cold weather, snow covered streets and dark days that seem to last forever.

Tulips will soon be blooming and the aromatic waft of lilacs and apple blossom will once again envelope our city, marking the beginning of a new season. I always look forward to this time of year, not only for it’s beauty but for the infusion of fashion. It’s time to shed our winter garb, put away those nasty cumbersome coats and mittens and start the oncoming months with something fresh, exciting and new.

I love to partake in the event of spring shopping and my yearly pilgrimage in search of the latest in style has now become a ritual in anticipation of the warmer weather to come. In the 1970’s my girlfriends and I would make our way to the local shopping mall where tightly fitted Jordache jeans and CHUM T-shirts were the order of the day. The Eagles and Elton John ruled the airwaves, and  “Farrah hair” was the one style that all women longed for but could never achieve.

In the eightees it was a very different story. Power suits, big hair, bold make-up and mega sized shoulder pads that made us all look like football players in drag were reflective of a time when “cash was king” and when Boy George and the Culture Club made their imprint. But this fashion nightmare was not to last long.

The ninetees were just around the corner with its minimalist attitude made prevalent with the help of Seattle grunge bands like Nirvana, and “Heroin Chic” sullenly paraded down the fashion cat walks in drab colors of beige and black, dictating a decade of boring looks that made us all long for better days.

Well, they are finally here! In this new millennium, it seems that we have undergone a fashion revolution and today the term “Girls just wanna have fun” has never rung truer. Feminine dressing is back with a vengeance and our stores are filled to the brim with a rainbow of color and a burst of beauty that has not been seen in quite a while. “A-line” skirts to just below the knee that flatter all body shapes and flat ballet slipper styled shoes reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn in the movie Sabrina are everywhere this year. Flowered handbags and pastel colored shrugs that tie at the waistline and cropped jackets are the big items for this season. The trench coat, tweed suits and bejeweled brooches are still popular buys and “The Power of Pink” prevails in our store windows, as do shades of lavender.

But if you really want to be a fashion diva in spring 2005 you have to purchase something in green. Or better yet, get yourself a scarf of many colors. Whether its wrapped around your neck or attached to your handbag, this look is oh so chic and says “I know style”! Make-up is soft and sheer and hair has gone from straight and perfect to loosely curled locks with the wavy appearance of natural bed head. “Pretty” is back in vogue, and just in the nick of time!

Spring has finally sprung, our Toronto retailers are out in full bloom and I am thoroughly taking advantage of the situation! After a long and depressing winter there is nothing that I enjoy more than a spirited afternoon out with the girls doing some much needed spring shopping. Hope to see you there!
